This knowledge base article (KBA) contains instructions on how to set up an account with Virginian Identity.

Click Create an Account to begin this process.

You will be redirected to the Create an Account page:

Set up your profile and enter the following fields:

  • Email Address (use a personal email address)
  • First Name
  • Middle Name (optional)
  • Last Name
  • Suffix (optional)
  • Date of Birth (MM-DD-YYYY)
  • Street Address
  • Apt/Unit Number (optional)
  • City
  • State
  • Zip
  • Contact Phone Number

Be sure the information you provide matches your driver’s license or state issued ID.

Click Submit

The following page will be displayed stating the account is almost ready and an email has been sent to activate your account.

Activate your account:

In the email, click Activate Virginian Identity Account. This will open a new window. If you don’t see the email in your inbox, you may need to check your spam/junk folder.

You will be redirected to the login portal. To continue the activation, click Set up ->

You will be prompted to create a password. The password must follow the listed requirements. Please enter the same password in both the Enter Password and Re-enter password boxes. Once these requirements are met click on Next.

You will then receive an email mentioning that a security method has been enrolled for your account. If you don’t see the email in your inbox, you may need to check your spam/junk folder.

Your Virginian Identity account has been successfully created.

Virginian Identity gives a user the ability to change anything profile-related such as name, address or phone number. You need to be logged in to update your account profile. If you need help logging in, refer to the Sign in to Virginia identity with email authentication help instructions.

Once logged in, click Update Profile on the left-hand side of the side bar.

The Update Profile page displays. Make updates regarding fields associated with your profile. The information you provide should match your driver’s license or state issued ID. Click Save to make these changes or Cancel to disregard.

Once saved the following Congratulations! page displays. You have successfully updated your profile.

Virginian Identity gives a user the ability to change their password. First, you must be logged in to update your password. If you need help logging in, refer to the Sign in to Virginia identity with email authentication help instructions.

Once logged in, click the Change Password tab in the menu bar.

You will be directed to a screen to receive an email with further instructions on changing your password. Click Submit.

Once you click submit an “Almost there!” screen will appear.

You will receive an email about a request to reset your Password, click Reset Password

You will be prompted to:

  1. Select a new password that meets the requirements
  2. Confirm it by retyping, then click Reset Password.

A message indicating that your password has been changed will be sent to your email. You should now use your newly created password to sign in.

Virginian Identity gives user the ability to reset their password if it is forgotten. Get started by selecting Forgot Password from the sidebar or the Click here to retrieve your password link.

 Enter your email address into the Email Address field, then click Submit.

A message will display and direct you to check your email for instructions to reset your password.

A reset message will be sent to your email address on file. When received, click the Reset Password button.

If you don’t see the email in your inbox, you may need to check your spam/junk folder for the email.

You will be redirected to the Virginian Identity page where you will be prompted to choose a new password. The new password must follow the listed requirements:

  • At least 8 characters
  • A lowercase letter
  • An uppercase letter
  • A number
  • A symbol
  • No parts of your username
  • Does not include your first name
  • Does not include your last name

 You will need to re-enter password to confirm and select Reset Password.

You will now be automatically logged in and rerouted to Virginian Identity.

How to Unlock your Account on Virginian Identity

Virginian Identity gives a user the ability to unlock their own account, if it is entered incorrectly three times.
Click the Unlock Account tab on the side bar menu.

You will be redirected to a page, where you will need to Enter your username (email) in the space provided and Click Submit.

An “Almost there!” message will appear, letting you know to check your email. If you do not see it in your inbox, check your spam or junk folder.

You will be prompted to:

  1. To enter your password and Click Verify
  2. If you forgot your password, Please Click “Forgot Password” and follow the steps. If you need help, please review the “Forgot Password” document in the Help and FAQs section of Virginian Identity.

You will be redirected to Get a verification email screen. Click Send me an email and an email will be sent to your inbox to verify your email.

In your inbox, open your email and click Sign in. If you don’t see the email in your inbox, you may need to check your spam/junk folder.

You will be re-directed to the Virginian Identity homepage and now you are signed in.

Question: What services are available in Virginian Identity?

Answer: Early adopters of the Virginian Identity access will use Boards and Commissions, from the Secretary of the Commonwealth page. Additional agencies and applications will be implemented in the future.

 

Question: Does my Virginian Identity account allow me to access all of my Virginia government account?

Answer: Virginian Identity is currently limited to the accounts listed in the Available Services tab. More services will be added as Virginian Identity expands.


Question: How do I get access to other government services that don't participate in Virginian Identity yet?

Answer: Please visit the Virginia.gov services page for a complete list of the Commonwealth services and resources.

Question: How do I create an account for a Commonwealth of Virginia service that is not on the Available Services page?

Answer: You will need to sign up for that agency's service or application separately.
